Developers

Africa's developer population, measured by active developers on open platforms, is growing at 21% a year — the fastest of any continent (BCG). That figure reads as pure good news, and mostly it is. But compounding has a side effect: a pool growing that fast keeps refilling with newcomers. As of 2020, in Africa's smaller ecosystems, 43% of developers had one to three years of experience, against 22% in the United States, and nearly a third taught themselves (IFC, e-Conomy Africa 2020). The scarce input is not talent or headcount. It is the person who reads your pull request, explains precisely why the fix is wrong, and unblocks you at 23:00. Every record year makes that person relatively scarcer.

The second problem is physical. The Africa region has two fixed-broadband subscriptions per hundred inhabitants (ITU, 2024) — the unmetered line every toolchain assumes barely exists here. Multi-gigabyte container pulls, dependency installs, always-on cloud IDEs: all paid for over mobile data, by the megabyte, often out of the developer's pocket. The gate is set earlier still: in Botswana, 84.2% of people aged five and over use a mobile phone, but only 32.2% use a computer (Statistics Botswana, 2024). That fifty-two-point gap is the distance between the people who can use software and the people equipped to make it. It is not a skills gap. It is a device gap — and it prices people out before the first line of code.
