Sub-Saharan Africa's recorded-music revenue grew 22.6% in 2024, second only to the Middle East and North Africa (IFPI) — and the whole market still came to US$110 million (IFPI). Nollywood ships roughly 2,500 films a year (UNESCO) into a formal exhibition system of one cinema screen per 787,402 people (UNESCO). Afrobeats and amapiano run global playlists while the royalties still struggle to find their way home. The growth story and the earnings story are both true, and they are about different things. The work travels. The money does not.

The reason is not talent, audience, or even piracy alone — though 50 to 75 percent of African film revenue is lost to piracy (UNESCO). The reason is that most African creative work is legally unfinished. Around 83% of employment on the continent is informal (ILO), and in a studio or on a set that means no split sheet, no release, no registered work, no licence terms. A song without documented splits cannot collect royalties abroad. A film without chain-of-title cannot be sold to a platform. Africa does not under-produce content — it over-produces it. What it under-produces is the paperwork that turns content into property.
